Inside an unbelievable Sydney home overlooking the Opera House, Blade House presents a carefully considered balance of luxury, liveability and connection to place. Located in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, the residence enjoys sweeping views across Sydney Harbour, taking in both the Harbour Bridge and Opera House from its elevated position. Designed through a collaboration between KA Design Studio, Atelier Alwill and Myles Baldwin Design, the project transforms an existing Georgian residence into a contemporary family home defined by calmness, light and enduring craftsmanship. The project began with a clear ambition: to create a forever home for a family returning to Sydney after years living overseas. The clients were drawn to the site's remarkable outlook but needed a home that could better support family life while capturing the sophistication of a luxury hotel experience. The result inside an unbelievable Sydney home overlooking the Opera House feels both elegant and welcoming, balancing grandeur with comfort. Rather than rebuilding, KA Design Studio approached the project as a thoughtful alteration and addition, reimagining the architecture to improve circulation, maximise natural light and strengthen the relationship between the interior and its surroundings. Several key requirements shaped the design process. As a professional pianist, the owner required a dedicated space for a grand piano, complete with carefully considered acoustics. The family’s growing art collection also demanded generous wall space and thoughtful sightlines throughout the home. These practical considerations informed major architectural decisions, including the placement of the staircase, the creation of expansive voids and the introduction of large openings that allow daylight to penetrate deep into the floor plan. Inside an unbelievable Sydney home overlooking the Opera House, light becomes one of the defining design elements. Throughout the day, shifting shadows animate the interiors, creating a sense of calm and atmosphere. Although west-facing, the home avoids feeling exposed, instead balancing brightness and shelter through carefully considered openings and spatial planning. This interplay between light and shadow enhances the feeling of tranquillity that runs throughout the residence. Atelier Alwill’s interiors bring warmth, glamour and texture to the architectural framework. Sculptural forms, refined materials and subtle detailing create moments of luxury while remaining grounded in everyday functionality. Today, inside an unbelievable Sydney home overlooking the Opera House is a testament to trust, collaboration and considered design, demonstrating how architecture, interiors and landscape can come together to create a home that feels timeless, personal and deeply connected to its setting. More than a family residence, inside an unbelievable Sydney home overlooking the Opera House reflects the transformative potential of thoughtful design. 0:00 - Introduction To Inside an Unbelievable Sydney Home Overlooking the Opera House 1:05 - Combining An Existing Georgian Structure With The Client's Vision 2:56 - Bringing Hotel-Like Luxury Into A Liveable Family Home 4:10 - Challenges Of Designing During COVID-19 For more from The Local Project: Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/thelocalproject/ Website – https://thelocalproject.com.au/ LinkedIn – https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-local-project-publication/ Print Publication – https://thelocalproject.com.au/publication/ Hardcover Book – https://thelocalproject.com.au/book/ The Local Project Marketplace – https://thelocalproject.com.au/marketplace/ For more from The Local Production: Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/thelocalproduction_/ Website – https://thelocalproduction.com.au/ LinkedIn – https://www.linkedin.com/company/thelocalproduction/ To subscribe to The Local Project's tri-annual print publication see here – https://thelocalproject.com.au/subscribe/ Photography by Prue Ruscoe.
